14 top fads in education and training

Let's keep this simple.... click on each title to get full critique...

We’re all leaders now, rendering the word meaningless.

2. Emotional Intelligence
No correlation with performance, a dodgy adjective pushing an even dodgier noun.

To believe in learning styles is to believe that the earth is flat. It’s an intuition gone bad.

HR should be looking at its own idiosyncratic behaviour before pronouncing shoddy and unprofessional judgements on others.

5. Learning objectives
Bore learners senseless at hte start of evert course.

Only reason it survives is that a coloured slide looks good in Powerpoint.

Inconvenient truths (research) that show ‘diversity’ as wrong-headed.

8. NLP
No Longer Plausible: training’s shameful, fraudulent cult?

9. Mindfulness
Yet another mindless fad.

Inefficient, inhibiting and harmful fiction that blocks better theory and practice.

11. 21st C skills
They're so last century!

12. Values
Mostly meaningless abstractions - Don;t be a dick! - the rest is hubris.

13. Piaget
Got nothing right and poor scientist

14. Kirkpatrick
Old theory, no longer relevant.

Just to say thanks Donald. Wish I had some profound insight or commentary to add but truth be told, I simply enjoyed your top 7 very much. A suitable tonic to all the flotsam and jetsam that surrounds the world of HR&OD. Personally I'd add Intelligent Design but we'd be straying into different territory.....

Enjoy your Christmas.

No wonder L&D, let alone HR in general, does not get invited to the big decision-making table in business. We're more like fortune tellers than strategic business partners.
